8 January 2013. They Celebrated the New Year in… Scotland… the Scots Call it “Hogmanay”

In Scotland, girls with the Scots flag stand in the River Forth during the annual Loony Dook Swim in South Queensferry. People celebrated Hogmanay all over Scotland. For many years, the Calvinist clergy discouraged the celebration of Christmas, deeming it popish frippery. Ergo, after a joyless interregnum that ended in the late 17th century, people celebrated the New Year instead.
