2 January 2014. All Around the Orthosphere… Rousanou Convent of St Barbara in the Meteora

The Rousanou Convent of St Barbara is one of the Meteora complex of monasteries in Greece. When these gals “left the world”, they LEFT the world. Originally, it was a male monastery, but it became a women’s house later on. Until the 17th century, the only way to get provisions was to haul them up on ropes. Today, the entire complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Some of the Optina fathers and their parishioners took these snaps. No… monks and nuns don’t “continually pray”… nor do they “always work”. They smile and laugh like all other human beings do. They’re not always “holy”… I think that’s what Fr Tikhon Shevkunov meant by entitling his new book Unholy Holiness. If it looks “holy”, it probably isn’t, and you must take a care to ensure that it wasn’t demonic and prelest-ridden. Remember… Hilary Madison, Dmitri Royster, Panteleimon Metropoulos, Sam Greene, Pierre l’Huillier, Feodosy Lazor, Gleb Podmoshensky, Nikolai Soraich, Seraphim Storheim, Ray Velencia, and Benjamin Peterson all looked like “holy men”… and we all know what they did. BEWARE. Holiness looks deceptively ORDINARY. Evil often comes wrapped in a pretty and alluring package. NEVER forget that.

God loves the animals… so do I… as do the good Optina fathers. Why don’t you take our hands and join us?
