One of the albums issued by the great Soviet photographer Vadim Gippenreiter simply had the title, Broad is My Motherland. A better description of Russia hasn’t been penned (do ignore Churchill’s ignorant and drunken bon mot, “A riddle wrapped up in an enigma”… that’s condescending and utterly false at base).

Here’s another view of the eruption of Tolbachik volcano as taken by the great Soviet-era photographer Vadim Gippenreiter. I’d NEVER get this close to an active spouting volcano… NEVER. There’s not enough money in the world to tempt me. This guy had STONES…
